Calculation of Rahu Kaal and its Importance in Muhurta

According to Vedic Astrology, a certain period of each day under the influence of Rahu is considered inauspicious.
Rahu is an inauspicious planet therefore the period of Rahu (Rahu Kaal or Rahu Kaal) is considered inauspicious and is avoided for any new venture.
According to Hindu mythology, Rahu is a snake that swallows the Sun causing eclipse.
The length of rahukaal is around 90 minutes (but keep varying depending upon the duration of the day at any specific place).
Doing Puja, Hawan or Yagya (यज्ञ) to propitiate auspicious planets during this time is interfered by Rahu due to its malefic nature. If one does Puja, Hawan or Yagya during Rahu Kaal then desired results are not achieved. Hence it is important to consider Rahu Kaal before starting any new work. By doing so, possibility of achieving desired results is increased.

However any work related to Rahu gives good results during this period. Hawan, Yagya, etc. to propitiate Rahu can be done during this time.
Auspicious activities like marriage rituals, engagement, Grih-Pravesh, any purchase of stocks, shares, gold, home, car and starting new business or trade are avoided during this time. Rahu Kaal is considered only for undertaking any new work and already started work can be continued during Rahu Kaal.
Rahu Kaal is one of the eight segments of the day between sunrise and sunset. Eight segments of the day are calculated by taking the total time between sunrise and sunset at a given place and then dividing this time duration by eight.

Total duration of the day (Dinman) is divided into eight equal portions.
First portion of the day is never a Rahu Kaal.
Second Part is Rahukaal on Monday,
Third part is rahukaal on Saturday
Fourth part is rahukaal on Friday
Fifth part is rahukaal on Wednesday
Sixth part is rahukaal on Thursday
Seventh part is rahukaal on Tuesday
Eight part is rahukaal on Sunday
On Wednesday and Friday Rahukaal coincide with Abhijit muhurta
The timespan of Rahukaal varies each day and needs to be calculated as per the sunrise and sunset time.

Gandaanta- Ending Joint

The end and beginning of certain Nakshatras, Tithis and Rasis are transitional in nature and do not support the fruition or well-being of any event:

Nakshatra Gandaanta: According to the Surya Siddhanta, the Moon should not be in the last Pada of Aslesha, Jyeshtha and Revati, or in the first Pada of Asvini, Magha and Mula.

Tithi Gandaanta: The last 2 Nadis of Purna Tithis, and the first 2 Nadis of Nanda Tithis are Gandaanta. Two Nadis of Tithi translates into 24 minutes of Sun/Moon separation. The following table gives the degrees of Sun Moon separation which are Gandaanta:

15th (Purna) & 1st (Nanda)
5th (Purna) & 6th (Nanda)
10th (Purna) & 11th (Nanda)
359º 36’– 00º 24’
59º 36’– 60º 24’
119º 36’– 120º 24’
179º 36’– 180º 24’
239º 36’– 240º 24’
299º 36’– 300º 24’

Rasi Gandaanta: The Lagna should not be in the last half Nadi of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, and the first half Nadi of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, which are Gandaanta. One half Nadi of the Lagna’s
movement translates into 3 degrees, therefore, avoid the last 3 degrees of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces and the first 3 degrees of Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.
Exception: Gandaanta is nullified if the Moon is in a friendly Rasi or better, in her own Varga, and aspected by benefics.
Exception: Some sources consider Nakshatra Gandaanta to last for 4 Nadis instead of one Pada, while others consider only 2 Nadis. Four Nadis of the Moon in a Nakshatra translates into 53 minutes and 20 seconds of arc, while two Nadis translates into 26 minutes and 40 seconds. In cases where no better Muhurta is available one may, therefore, consider only these shorter Gandaanta periods.

Abhijit Muhurta – powerful and auspicious time of the day

Muhurta – Selection of the best time is one of the important part of Jyotisha. “Abhijit Muhurta” is a powerful election as per Hindu astrology. Abhijit refers to “winner” and Muhurta means “auspicious time”.

It has power to annihilate / destroy numerous malevolent influences in elections, This election is as or similarly powerful as Vijay Dashmi, Ravi Yoga, Sade-Teen Muhurta, Sarva-Karya-Arambha Muhurta, Gow-Dhuli, and Vijay Muhurta & Amrit Ghatis for initiating a wide spectrum of life activities.

It is believed that success is assured if work is done at the right time. Generally, to find an auspicious Muhurta: day, date, Nakshtra (constellation), Yoga (conjunction), and day-duration are analysed; on the basis of which success can be ensured. But, these calculations are a bit difficult and can only be done by a Panchang expert. In such a situation, Abhijit Muhurta is the best for common people who don’t know much about Panchang. Abhijit Muhurta is an auspicious time period that occurs every day and in which any auspicious task can be performed.

This muhurta is capable of removing all the doshas prevalent at that time.

Calculations of Abhijit Muhurta

Abhijit Muhurta is calculated on the basis of sunrise and sunset at the particular place or the city. Abhijit Muhurta starts from 24 minutes before the local Noon time and remains till 24 minutes after the noon time. The total time of Abhijit Muhurta is 48 minutes for a twelve hour day. But duration of Abhijit may change depending upon the dinmaan (day Length).
In other words Abhijit Muhurta is the 8thmuhurta of the fifteen muhurta of the day (the entire day is divided into 30 Muhurtas). It is also known and famous as Vijay Muhurat. According to the Narad Puran Abhijit Muhurta is the fourth lagna from the lagna at the time of sunrise.

For variable length of daytime its duration should be calculated proportional to non-nocturnal (daytime) length. Proportional election time (total duration) of this election is 15th part of the daytime length. Thus at a place of activity on a given day the election shall be current during:

LNT ± [(proportional election time) ÷ 2]
= [(Sunset time + Sunrise time) ÷2] ± [(Sunset time – Sunrise time) ÷ 30]
For example if Sunrise is at 07.00 IST & the Sunset time is 18.00 IST at a place of an activity then, its total duration shall be 44 minutes (11 ÷12 x 48 = 44 m). Local Noon Time shall be 12.30 IST. The said election time shall start from 12.08 & ends at 12.52 IST (12.30 ± 22 m).

Example- To calculate the Abhijit muhurta at any place
Let’s assume
Sunrise at – 05:30
Sunset at -18:30
Local Noon Time (LNT) = (1830+0530)/2=12hr
Abhijit Muhurta=LNT± (Sun set- Sun rise)/30
=12± (1830-0530)/30 hrs
=12±13/30hrs
=12±26minutes

In the above example the length of day is 13 hrs. That is why the standard duration of Abhijit muhurta changes from 48 minutes to 52(26x2) minutes.

This Muhurta has blessing of Lord Vishnu who destroys innumerable Doshas with His Sudarshan Chakra during the currency of this Muhurta. Lord Shiva killed a powerful demon named Tripurasur, who captured the three world, Akash, Prithvi, Pataal with his immense power in this Muhurta.

Abhijit Muhurta is eligible for almost all auspicious tasks like house-warming ceremony, marriage, traveling for the first time regarding work, starting a new work, starting a new venture, repaying debts, investing money, or performing any Puja etc.

 Limitations of Abhijit Muhurta

Traveling in South direction is prohibited in Abhijit Muhurta.
Additionally, no auspicious task should be performed during the Abhijit Muhurta of Wednesday. This muhurta loses its beneficence on Wednesday. As on Wednesdays Abhijit Muhurta forms a malefic muhurta, it coincide with the Rahu-Kaal.
Last but not least this muhurta should be used in emergencies when no other suitable times are available otherwise one may fails to harness the richness of other Muhurtas available on that day.

Same way at midnight 1 Ghati on the either side of Midnight is Abhijit muhurta.

One thing that needs to be mentioned is that Abhijit Muhurta and Abhijit Nakshtra (constellation) has no direct relation with each other. But, if Abhijit Muhurta and Abhijit Nakshtra falls together, it is considered extremely auspicious. It is said that Lord Krishna born in this muhurta during night and Lord Rama was born during this muhurta in day time.
It has power to annihilate / destroy numerous malevolent influences in elections. However, its efficacy is enhanced by presence of special Muhurta Yogas. This election is that powerful that some exponents have praised to the extent that when a suitable election is not available, it can be selected for fruition of the desi

Importence of Eclipse In Muhurta Astrology

Eclipse consideration in Muhurta:
Also known as Grahanotpaatabham- Seizing Portent (eclipse) Nakshtra
The Nakshtra in which there is a Solar or Lunar eclipse happens should be rejected
Full eclipse :  avoided for six months,
Half Eclipse: avoided for three months
One fourth eclipse: avoided for one month.

If the Sun or Moon sets while being eclipsed, then the three
days before the eclipse are particularly unfavorable.
If the Sun or Moon rises while being eclipsed, then the three days after the eclipse
are particularly unfavorable.
The eclipse of the Sun is more severe than is the eclipse of the Moon.

Graha Shula
The seven Nakshtra prior to the Nakshtra in which the Moon is placed during an eclipse and the seven Nakshtra after are Graha Shula, which should be avoided.
(According to this view, approximately seven days before and after an eclipse should be
avoided.)
If no better Muhurta is available, it is acceptable to perform an event in the 4th through 7th days following an eclipse and the 1st through 3rd days of the week before an eclipse. Eclipses are only destructive if the Sun and Moon are afflicted, else they simply cause events to be different from what was hoped for or expected.

Maha Shula:
The Nakshtra opposite the one in which an eclipse occurs is Maha Shula (great spike) and should be avoided following an eclipse.

Eclipse Phala:
If eclipse takes place in Janam Nakshtra(Birth star) it results in death
If it takes place in Janam Rashi (Moon Sign) it results in trouble.
If eclipse takes place in 2nd nakshtra from birth nakshtra it results in losses
If eclipse takes place in 3rd nakshtra from birth nakshtra it results in wealth.
If eclipse takes place in 4th nakshtra from birth nakshtra it results in emotional stress.
If eclipse takes place in 5th nakshtra from birth nakshtra it results in worries.
If eclipse takes place in 6th nakshtra from birth nakshtra it results in happiness.
If eclipse takes place in 7th nakshtra from birth nakshtra it results in spouse troubles.
If eclipse takes place in 8th nakshtra from birth nakshtra it results in death.
If eclipse takes place in 9th nakshtra from birth nakshtra it results in loss of reputation.
If eclipse takes place in 10th nakshtra from birth nakshtra it results in happiness.
If eclipse takes place in 11th nakshtra from birth nakshtra it results in gains.
If eclipse takes place in 12th nakshtra from birth nakshtra it results in loss
Remedy: Japa, giving gold and cow in charity.
Count the number from natal Moon sign to the sign in which Sun or Moon eclipse occurs.

Tarabala and Chandrabala in Muhurta

While fixing an Muhurta apart from the special planetary combinations to be applied for specific purposes, three factors which are common to almost all Fixing of Muhurtas and which require most careful attention are
                       (a) Tarabala or strength of constellation,

                        (b) Chandrabala or lunar strength, and

                        (c) Panchaka or five-source energy.

These three should be satisfactorily disposed. Otherwise Muhurta chart will lose its significance.

Tara Bala or Strength of Constellation. –

Tara balam is the strength provided by the stars in ones horoscope or the particular time which we choose to celebrate an auspicious event. Moon`s Nakshtra need to be favorable for casting any Muhurta.
The transit of the Moon one star to another marks the favorable and unfavorable to one’s birth star.
This is divided into three sets consisting 9 in each (Navtara). It is calculated from the position of daily star from ones birth star. If the result is 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 or 0 then it is taken as good otherwise bad.
Count from the birth Nakshtra to the one ruling on the particular day on which a new work is to be done or a journey undertaken and divide the number by 9 if divisible. Otherwise keep it as it is.

If the remainder is
